31 "This Lewis Thompson was a zealous and active loyalist during the revolutionary war. In courting and visiting his wife near Pleasant Valley he had become familiar with all the roads and byways and also the customs and habits of the Dutch settlers there." "[He] owned the old stone house on the west side of the turnpike from Freehold to Smithburg (now Elton, formerly Clayton's Corner). This property was owned by Acsah Hendrickson, wife of Enoch Hendrickson, for many years. Since her death, one Hartman bought it. The private family grave yard of the Thompsons is on the farm."
