Joseph I. Thompson, who was stricken with paralysis while driving to Red Bank from his place at Navesink, died at the Globe hotel last Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Thompson was well-known throughout the county. He was born at Freehold and learned the blacksmith trade. In 1844 he was appointed lighthouse keeper at the Highlands and
served for five years, Afterward he bought property at the Highlands, which increased in value and made him a very rich man. He served as sheriff of Monmouth county from 1859 to 1862. He married Eleanor Schureman Johnson in 1834. She died some years ago. Mr. Thompson left four children, Cornelius J., who lived at home; John I. Thompson; Ella, wife of Eugene W. Benton of Red Bank; and Margaret Matilda, wife of John N. Riker of Woodside, L. I.

Mr. Thompson's funeral took place at the Red Bank Presbyterian church last Saturday morning. The body was laid in a black cloth-covered casket, with silver extension bar handles. The face was but little changed. On the coffin was a silver plate giving his name, age and date of death. The pall-bearers were Jehu P. Cooper, Derrick G. Campbell, Charles Allen, Sr., Benjamin Griggs, Timothy Maxson, and George Morford. The funeral party was taken to Freehold in two special cars, where the burial took place.
